I still remember the 1969 Road Runner I had when I came back from Vietnam in 1971. Maybe it is not considered an antique car, but more of a late muscle car. After 20 years they all become old cars. My brother had purchased it new and I bought it from him for $2500.00. The exterior was an olive green with white vinyl interior and a black dash.It was powered by the standard 383 Road Runner engine backed up with a chrome and wood 4 speed pistol grip shifter. Out of the times I had run it against other cars on the street I was only found once the follower when I went against a 1964 Chevy 427 who walked away from me in 2nd gear. Never would let me look under his hood. The Turkey!

One like the one I owned.
I traded that muscle car in in 1974 for a 68 Black Oldsmobile Cutlass with a 350 engine after my wife and I got married. Can't help but wonder if that green beauty is still alive and well or if made it to the crusher. Ouch! The thought of that really hurts. I undoubtedly had some good times in that old car, and it was so very much fun to drive also. Even when Mary threw her body across the hood to keep me from driving off the White Castle lot. (She was unhappily married already) That is the whole idea of old cars and problems with women.
Gasoline at that time was about 35 cents a gallon and 26 cents during a gas war pricing and at that price you could afford to black top the highway a couple times a week with those 15 inch Thomson tires.
Any way I was reading in popular science about the new Plug-N-Play Cars of 0 to 60 in nine seconds with zero emissions and all electric I realized how the times are changing. Mitsubishi's I MiEV Sport will do

Mitsubish I miev
Sure doesn't look like the classic cars of 1969 or any of those years I remember.
However, times they are a changing and GM's new Volt does have some nice character and features to it when you are looking for quite, electric, environmental, gas saving sporty shape car. GM says it will be sending it to the market place in late 2010. Maybe by then the distance from home to store for the batteries will increase.

Volt-
Tesla has produced a nice looking electric that I believe has some really nice sport features that can be recharged from any 120V, 240V or 480V outlet with the latter taking only 45 minutes. The standard version Model S does 0-60 mph in under six seconds and offers an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph. There is also Sport version that does 0-60 mph below five seconds. The car comes with a 17-inch touchscreen and includes in-car 3G connectivity. Tesla expects to start Model S production in late 2011.

Tesla-
There is no doubt about it that the world and the car industry has changed drastically in the last 40 years. A lot for the better in quality, performance, and dependability. I remember the old cars of the 1960s and even in the 70s when the automatic choke would fail and you had to get out, raise the hood, remove the air cleaner and let it dry out before it would start. Computer Fuel injection has been a tremendous leap into quick starts and more power even when the weather is down around zero degrees or more.
I still hear that ear catching Warner Bros Beep Beep horn on the Road Runner along with it's fast Bird on the front doors speeding a way ahead of the wild and crazy coyote that was always just chasing and never catching.

Forever the sound of Beep Beep
Now at 58 years old when I go to the garage and start my 2007 Dodge Ram with its Hemi engine, blue tooth telephone, 6 CD changer, anti skid and anti braking, fuel injected engine I have a special respect for it on those cold mornings when I turn the key and hear that sweet VAROMMMM sound. Still, There are those warm summer days I would love to be able to feel the power and hear the beep beep as I tour around town in my 69 Road Runner or even my wife's 69 Camaro she was driving when we met.
Right now. I will just be satisfied and semi content cruising around town and down to Branson for a couple days in our 1976 Corvette and pulling in a Sonic for a burger and fries. It is all part of being, “Car Crazy” and reminiscing of those wonderful muscle cars and Hot Rods of long ago.
